Housing across this service area runs mostly 1938 through 2009, with the bulk of it built in the 1960s and '70s across the 92 named areas we track. A lot of those original garage doors and their springs are long past due - torsion springs are rated for a cycle count, not a calendar, and a door that's opened a few times a day for fifty years has cycled through several springs' worth of life even if nobody remembers replacing one.
The cold winters here matter too. Steel spring wire contracts in cold and the metal gets more brittle right at the point of fatigue, so a spring that's been weakening all year is more likely to snap on a January morning than a July afternoon. Combine older housing stock with a real cold season and you get a service area where spring failure is one of the most common calls we run, not a rare event. It's also why we don't recommend patching a stretched or rusted spring - once the coil shows corrosion or uneven gaps, replacement is the only fix that holds.
